Halloween is Coming

I don’t know what’s going on here. If this was in color, and HD, it probably wouldn’t creep me out nearly as much as it does as is.

It’s Einstein with an electric guitar. My brain exploded from how cool this looks.

Dusk, by Maris

This painting, for some reason, just creeps the hell out of me. I want a print of it, to look at in a darkened room with some merlot. Maybe a medium-rare steak.

Tiny Recognition for Omaha!

Dude! This is actually really cool. I’ve known there was an Omaha sound for a while, primarily due to one of my favorite bands, The Faint. But seeing it on a map, with no other “sounds” around it for several hundred miles, is kind of cool.

Moment of Weakness

As a blogger, and a mild narcissist, I like to see people visit this site that contains the crap I like. It’s a pat on the back, a reassurance that what I like is what other people like. And the more people who visit here, the better. To a point.

About an hour ago, I’m visiting my favorite webcomic of the moment, Real Life Comics. And I see along the bottom a lonely “Your Ad Here, $5.00″ sign. I don’t know if it’s five bucks for an entire month, or per day, or what, but I’m thinking, “Wow, it’d be cool to get some more people visiting here. And it’s only five bucks!”

I got so far as to sign up on the advertising-placement page before I realized a couple things. 1) Real Life Comics gets at the barest minimum 500 times as much traffic as Bugloaf gets. (This is probably a very, very low estimate, by a factor of 10). 2) I have no idea what Bugloaf’s bandwidth limits are, and 3) I’m not selling any products, and serve to earn ZERO profit from advertising on this site.

So, despite how cool it would be to have a ga-JILLION people visiting, until I have a marketable site and/or product, the idea of actually paying for advertising is incredibly dumb. It’s like taking a lighter to a stack of dollar bills every month for no good reason.

On the flip-side, to actually pay for a bandwidth increase would be pretty sweet, since it’d be vindication of a sort. It’s like making so much money that you have to be placed in a higher tax bracket. On one hand, more taxes = more suckage. On the other, hey, I’m rich enough to have to pay more taxes! I’m awesome! (Although to pay less taxes like the ultra-mega-rich would be nicer, but that’s another subject entirely.)

In the meantime, since I barely have enough time as it is to keep Bugloaf at the mediocre level of coolness in which it currently resides, I won’t be buying any advertising. Maybe when I start designing t-shirts or bumper stickers, in a someday land, I will think about changing my course.

1,942 days, 2,500 posts

Wow. This blog, by many names and slight variations, is now over 5 years old, and contains 2,500 posts. I started this blog as a snarky comeback at Omaha, Nebraska by calling the blog “The Best Of Omaha”. The idea was that even the dumbest stuff I posted was better than Omaha…or something like that. It made more sense in my head, to be honest, and I ended up keeping the name for a while mostly out of habit.

A couple years later, I changed the name to Kraznoy, after a fake swear-word I made up in anticipation of having kids someday. (I tend to swear A LOT in the car, so I make up words to swear with. It is not very effective, but it passes the time). Kraznoy is derived from Krasnoyarsk, a Russian city whose only connection to me is the game Civilization.

Then, when I lapsed on re-registering Kraznoy right away, the domain got hijacked by an unscrupulous fellow from Florida. I was forced to change the name, and I cycled through a few before finally centering in on Bugloaf.

Bugloaf is probably my favorite name so far. It’s short, it’s easy to remember, and it’s kinda gross. The name comes from this story I found on Nutra-loaf, a nutritional meat-bread served as punishment to prisoners who act up. It’s kind of a tasteless blob, made with animal parts and who know what else. Supposedly it’s good for you, but I would never want to try it. No…I actually kinda do want to try it someday.

This is punishment. Yummy, yummy punishment.

Right after reading the article, the name Bugloaf popped into my head, and the rest is history. Now, the site is actually getting far more hits than it ever has, averaging double what it was a year ago…which is only about 40 hits a day, but hey, that’s a lot for a site that doesn’t publicize. Since I earn no advertising dollars, I don’t really feel the need to publicize very much.

It’s been a nice run so far, and hopefully I’ll keep on doing this. It seems to be a really handy spot to stick my bookmarks and funny pictures when I need to clear off my hard drive.

In closing, thanks to everyone for making this a fun hobby. The site continues to get better and better as time goes on. I’m very glad you chose to park on my site for a few minutes, and I hope you enjoy your stay.

Thanks much,

- Aaron (aka Pete from Best of Omaha)
